Essay: Is College Worth It?

Essay: Is College Worth It?

For this assignment, you will create an academic argument that answers the question: is college worth it?

For this paper, you will illustrate your skills as a critical reader of texts. You will work independently to develop an informed opinion paper that uses credible published research to support your opinion on an issue.

Audience

Your audience will be an educated academic audience, a small committee of first-year writing faculty.

The Issue

For this assignment you will create an academic argument that answers the question: is college worth it?

Rhetorical Strategies

The use of credible sources: whenever you write, you want to make certain your audience will respect the sources you use in support of your opinions. Your ethos as a writer and researcher may be improved or damaged depending on whom you site. You are judged by the company you keep, so you will need to learn to evaluate sources to determine how credible they are with your audience before using them in your own paper.

The support of claims: your academic audience will expect to know your opinion on this issue, but they will also expect you to support any/every major claim you make with some good reasoning (logos), information from an expert, or some evidence from credible sources to support that claim.

The use of an academic voice: for this paper you will want to speak almost entirely in the third person, only very sparingly (if at all) in the first person, and never using second person. One of the best ways you can establish your ethos with an audience is to write the way your audience does, to imitate their voice, their sentence patterns, their organizational strategies, and their citation practices.

First-person expression of an opinion: I believe the first amendment should be preserved because free speech and the right to assemble are essential to the operation of a democracy.

Third-person expression of an opinion:The first amendment should be preserved because free speech and the right to assemble are essential to the operation of a democracy.

The use of a balanced approach: while you are being asked to provide your educated, informed, and fully supported opinion on this issue, you will also want to find a way to address the opposition, to illustrate that you have weighed both sides of the debate and, despite the reasoned claims of the opposition, chosen the other side. This helps your ethos because your audience will see that you have done your research and formed your opinion based on a careful study of both sides. Your ethos may also be strengthened if you address places where the opinions, claims, or values of the opposition overlap with your opinions, claims, or values.

Employing appropriate rhetorical appeals:Because your paper will be addressed to an academic audience, you will want to rely primarily on ethos (your authority, credibility, character as a writer/researcher) and logos (the use of reason and evidence). Pathos (the use of emotion to persuade) should probably be avoided since your audience tends to privilege experiences and opinions that have been processed through thought rather than feelings.

Requirements

Your informed opinion paper will be 4-6 pages long, double-spaced, Times New Roman 12pt font.

Your paper will include summaries, quotes, and paraphrases of at least two of the sources you were provided in class. These sources will be used to support your opinion in the paper, and they will be cited in both in-text and in your Works Cited page.
